Olympic Regatta Day 12:
Last Day for American Stars and Tornados

Tornado sailors John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree

Star sailors John Dane and Austin Sperry head back to the
marina after a day of racing earlier in the Olympic Regatta.

Qingdao, China (August 20) - USA Stars and Tornados sailed three races today in gorgeous weather. In eight to fifteen knots and sunshine they got their races started on time at 11:00 a.m. Unfortunately, the results were not so sunny for the two American boats. They were both unable to qualify for tomorrow's top ten medal race, though John Dane III (Gulfport, Miss.) and Austin Sperry (Gulfport, Miss.) came just shy in eleventh place.

The American Star and Tornado teams took the same gamble going into this event: They committed to equipment packages that were exceptional in light air but hindrances in breezes over around six knots. John Lovell (New Orleans, La.) and Charlie Ogletree (Kemah, Texas.) chose to use a smaller, flatter gennaker that could be used upwind. They were depending on light air conditions for their weapon to work, but Ogletree said they only saw those ideal winds in one race of the ten-race Tornado series.

finn_day9_railey_wins_silver4 Railey: Silver is "complete euphoria"
By Gary Jobson

In his Olympic debut, Zach Railey has won a silver medal in the Finn class, the first U.S. sailing medal at the 2008 Games. And it was no easy feat: Railey had to battle stormy seas, race postponements and of course, Great Britain's golden boy, Ben Ainslie. NBCOlympics.com spoke with Railey about the regatta.

Zach, congratulations. You've been working for this for a long time now. Once you finally got to the Olympics, how did it compare?
It went as planned. I was very honest with myself. I knew there were 10-12 guys that could get on the podium, I was confident I could be one of them. Standing on that podium I realized that everything was worth it to be up there...

DeanBrenner Latest Blog Update by Team Leader Dean Brenner
Anna's Moment

Every athlete is different. Every athlete deals with pressure and stress differently. Some give into it. Some thrive on it. And some seem to be oblivious to it. I have a daily routine when I am at big events like the Games. I make a point of walking each athlete and their boat down to the boat ramp, and giving them a fist bump or a hug or a pat on the back before they shove off for the day. I like to be that last smiling face they see before they compete, and I like to let them know I have confidence in them. I like to think it helps them. So, yesterday, at about 12:32pm, I walked Anna Tunnicliffe and her Laser down the boat ramp for the Laser Radial Medal Race at the 2008 Olympic Games...

For their fantastic medal performances, US SAILING is proud to name U.S. Olympic Sailing Team members Anna Tunnicliffe (Laser Radial) and Zach Railey (Finn) this week's US SAILORS of the Week! Anna was the world's number 1 Laser Radial sailor going into the Olympic Games, and last Tuesday in her final race of the '08 Olympic Regatta she showed why, winning the gold medal. And last Sunday, Zach Railey won a silver medal after racing a consistent regatta. Anna and Zach are 25 and 24 years old, respectively, and have a long sailing career ahead of them. We look forward to hearing from them in the future. Congratulations Anna and Zach!
