Olympic Regatta Day 10:
Tunnicliffe Locks Up Olympic Medal

Anna Tunncliffe has secured a spot on the podium
before going into Tuesday's final race.

Tornado sailors John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree hope that
tomorrow's weather forecast will work in their favor.

Qingdao, China (August 18) - After today's three races, USA Laser Radial representative Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, FL) has ensured herself a medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. Usually reserved after a day of racing, Tunnicliffe let herself enjoy today's accomplishment as she hit the dock. After a 15, 2, 2 today, she sits in first and is 21 points over fourth place to just squeak by with a medal.

Wearing her anti-seasickness patch, she said of her position, "It's a huge relief, but it's still a big race tomorrow." Tunnicliffe has consistently been in mix of the top of the event, but her lead has always been within striking distance of her competitors. The same is true for tomorrow's medal race, as the double-points format chops her lead in half. Tunnicliffe is seven points ahead of second and eleven points ahead of third. She says tonight she will sit down with her coaches and work out the final approach. "We'll discuss strategies and best-case and worst-case scenarios. We'll plan an attack in case I have to do any of that."

Tomorrow's Laser Radial medal race is to take place at 1:00 p.m. in winds forecasted for 4-6 knots. World #1 ranked Tunnicliffe has performed in all conditions at this event. She was happy to have one windy race yesterday to flex her big breeze muscles, but she's just as quick in the light winds.

Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast Break Down the Breakdown

49er sailors Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast competed in yesterday's Medal Race when their boat broke down moments before the start. Here's an inside-look written by skipper Tim Wadlow explaining what happened:

"Unfortunately for Chris and I our jib blocks ripped out at 7 minutes to the start. Chris spent some time jury rigging the blocks by removing the tail of the jib halyard and tying the blocks to the front of the boat. The jib halyard is super thin line so he doubled it over a few times. While he was working on the repair I was watching the clock and keeping our boat upright and close to the line. At this point it was 19 knots of wind, and 5ft waves.

We finished the repair at 1:20 to the start, tacked over, beam reached across the line, and set up at the committee boat. We then spent 30 [seconds] calming ourselves, and getting ready. At the gun we had a great start. The jury rig didn't allow me to pull the jib in all the way, but it was close enough. We wanted the right, so we tacked shortly after the start. About 2 minutes into the race the jury rig broke..."

Eternal Pride, Momentary Sadness

This is my sixth draft of today's post. I normally post in one draft, because the words just come. But not today.

Yesterday was one of those days. It was one of those days that you dream about and you dread. It was one of those days you look forward to all your life, and hope will never come.

We had three medal races yesterday, first in the Yngling, then the Finn and then the 49er. We watched all three races on Course A from the sea wall, and we spent the day standing in rain that could generously be described as biblical. My guess is about a foot of rain fell from the skies yesterday, and the winds ranged from 15 early in the day, to a solid 25 for the 49er race. It rained constantly. When I finally returned to my room last night after 12 hours in the rain, I looked like I had just stepped out of the shower with my clothes on...
