Olympic Regatta Day 8:
Mixed Bag for Qingdao Racing

Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast are in 6th overall going into
Sunday's medal races in the 49er class.

Finn sailor Zach Railey consults with rules expert Dave Perry.
Today's medal race for the Finn class was abandoned.

Qingdao, China (August 16) - Qingdao offered a mixed bag of breezes for today's packed schedule. 470 Men and Women were able to fully catch up to their ten-race program, with eight knots in their first races dying to a subsequent five or six knots. However, all nine other events were unable to keep up with their allotted races.

49ers may have seen the worst racing today with a 120 degree shift in their first race. Despite the tricky day, Tim Wadlow (Beverly, MA) and Chris Rast (San Diego, CA) managed a third place. Rast said, "We hoisted the chute halfway up the second beat and then no one knew where the finish was. But we saw 270 degrees displayed at the course change, so we just made progress toward 270." They sailed most of the final leg without the finish line in sight, but their blind progress was perfectly directed, and they passed from 8th to third on that leg. Today's results were 3, 8, 4, thus putting them in sixth place overall and qualifying them for tomorrow's medal race.

Gary_Jobson_at_work Olympic Sailing Media:
Behind the Scenes with Gary Jobson

Gary Jobson gets to go to work at noon. It might sound like a slacker's dream, but it's not. It's the Olympics, and Jobson doesn't get home from work until 7:30 a.m. Jobson has been associated with the Olympics since 1972 as a campaigner, an Olympic Sailing Committee member, commentator, and now blogger. He is based out of NBC's online office on Stamford, CT for the Olympics and is living on China time to keep up with the sailing events.

He does research from noon to five, eats dinner and takes a nap, and gets ready for the day's racing at 9:30 p.m. This is his first time covering the Olympics on the internet and is happy with the benefits of the web. "We've never had a live Olympics before. It's always been ten-minute prepackaged segments on TV, so in ways this is better." Jobson admits TV would be preferable and said at first he was not sure about the blogging concept. "I went into this with a lot of concerns about how it was going to go. Now I'm feeling better because I've gotten a lot of feedback." For example, during a postponement a few days ago, Jobson posted his email address online offering to answer questions. He says, "Within five minutes I got 200 emails. So I know people are watching and America is intrigued by our team."

Joy and Nerves Abound

I'm torn between the polar opposite emotions of joy and stress. On one hand, I am jumping-out-of-my-skin happy for Zach Railey who yesterday sailed a brilliant 8th race in the Finn Class and put himself on the brink of an Olympic medal. But on the other hand, Sally Barkow, Debbie Capozzi and Carrie Howe are in for a full-on street brawl in the Yngling Class today.

Zach saw an opportunity yesterday, match-raced the French Finn sailor to the back of the fleet, and put a significant cushion between himself and 4th place in the standings. He still has some work to do today, but the points between him and the boats in 3rd and 4th are not small...
