Qingdao, China (August 15) - Winds did not cooperate with today's aggressive catch-up schedule for the Olympic Sailing Regatta and all racing was postponed for four hours due to light and
shifty winds. Boats were held in delays on the water, and some classes were brought in around 2:00 p.m. to wait onshore. Boats were re-launched after a brief wait and the Finns had started racing by 3:45 p.m. As they
were in a delayed start that could not be rescheduled in time to make the day, 49ers were canceled for the day at 4:00 p.m. From noon to 4:00 p.m., hourly wind directions were reported in degrees as follows: 86; 69; 117; 79;
23. Though winds steadied out, sailors from different courses and different countries agreed today's racing was dicey. In the words of one sailor, the sailing today was "marginal at best." All classes sailed one race
today, except the 470 Women who were able to sneak in two races.
Zach Railey (Clearwater, FL) had a rough beginning to his first race and found himself in ninth after the first lap...

What Defines an Olympic Sailor?
Nutrition Notes from Lisa Dorfman
Sailors have been ramping up their workouts and trimming down their diets in preparation for the light winds in Qingdao. A few sailors on the U.S. team have noticed that some competitors have gone overboard with the weight
loss. Looking at the bikinis and barebacks in the boat park there are ribs and collarbones sticking out like never before, but the USA's goal is to accomplish healthy weight loss while preserving muscle and stamina.
Team nutritionist Lisa Dorfman has worked with USOC athletes for twenty years and currently works with over 400 athletes per year. Dorfman is a triathlete and a vegetarian, though she doesn't recommend vegetarianism for
most athletes she says it can work for sports nutrition. By working with athletes from so many sports, Dorfman has an idea of what sailors need in particular. She starts, "Each athlete is special and different and has
unique needs based on their sport, gender, culture and personal lifestyle habits." What makes sailing nutritionally different is that "nothing stays static." For example light winds in China pose different
weight concerns than heavy winds on Buzzards Bay. Also, she says, "Within sailing, energy expenditure and dietary needs change from class to class, and between genders."

Latest Blog Update by Team Leader Dean Brenner
Big Day
Dean often writes his blog early in the morning, Qingdao time. This morning, he was up exceptionally early:
With yesterday's lack of wind, the schedules are a little backed up, and the race committee will attempt to catch up a bit today. ...
BIG DAY! The whole team is in action, which means it will be quiet on the 15th floor where some of the staff will be watching. But it also means none of the team will have to watch me stressing and freaking as we watch
the results on TV and online.
I've been up for a while already today, earlier than normal. I can't sit still, my knee has been bouncing hard for a while, and the heart is pumping. And I don't think anyone else on the team (or in the venue, for that
matter) will be up for a while. Good thing I don't have my annual physical today. My blood pressure might be higher than normal! ...
