Olympic Regatta Day 5: USA Wins Six Races
|
|
|
|
470 sailors Amanda Clark and Sarah Mergenthaler
finished fourth in their first race of the day.
|
|
Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast won all three
races of the day today in the 49er.
|
Qingdao, China (August 13) - Tim Wadlow (Beverly, MA) and Chris Rast (San Diego, CA) built a picket fence with scores of 1, 1, 1 in today's 49er races. The pair entered the day in 13th
overall and had finished no better than fifth in the first six races, but they rebounded to sweep the day. Rast is competing in his third Olympics and ranked today as his "best ever!" He said, "It feels great to
get back on track." After a tough start to the regatta, they benefitted from yesterday's day off, taking the time to talk to mentors like Star coach Hans Wallen (SWE) and Rules Advisor Dave Perry (Southport, CT). Wadlow
explained, "We needed a day to chill out, reflect and come back with a new attitude. Now we're just going to take every race as it comes and give it our best shot." The first two 49er races were officially reported
as with two to three knot breezes, but Rast said it felt more like four. Rast and Wadlow said they owed a little bit of today's success to the wind gods, so maybe that's why it felt like four knots to them and no one else.
Wadlow and Rast have now moved up to fifth place overall in the 19-boat fleet.
Wadlow and Rast weren't the only ones to top the charts today, as the USA had bullets in three other classes. Team Leader Dean Brenner (Wallingford, CT) mentioned the USA's six race wins today to American-born New Zealand
coach Rod Davis, who said, "I don't know if that's ever happened!"

What Defines and Olympic Sailor?
Notes from Team Psychologist Dr. Jerry May
Sailors tend to refer to this unique sport as a regular sport plus chess. The mental aspect of the game requires a certain perception and intelligence, and just like any other Olympic level-sport, the mental side also can
balance on a sensitive line between just plain pressure and directed motivation. Dr. Jerry May founded the USOC's sports psychology program in 1977, and has been working with the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team since just after the
1992 Games. He spent thirteen years with US Alpine Ski Team, but he has also worked with non-traditional sports like competitive rock-drilling. After sixteen years with the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team, Dr. May is familiar with
the defining characteristics of sailors...

Latest Blog Update by Team Leader Dean Brenner
As Real As It Gets
There's no denying it. We're neck deep in the Olympic Games, and every one of our athletes is at the place they have wanted to be for at least the last four years. In some cases this is where
they have wanted to be for their entire lives. And no matter what else is going on around you, when you finally achieve something you have wanted for a very long time, the feelings can be intense. Add in some intense
competition and intense expectations and cook it up with some intense heat and humidity, and you have a stress bouillabaisse with a sharp aftertaste. Kids, don't try this at home without adult supervision.

US SAILOR of the Week -- Donnie Brennan
Donnie Brennan had just wrapped up his boat work at the Olympic Games in Athens four years ago and was about to go sightseeing on his way to the airport. He had been brought to the Olympics as boatwright
for Tornado team Johnny Lovell and Charlie Ogletree and his work was done. So he thought. Czech Europe sailor Lenka Smidova ran over to Donnie in tears. He explains, "She had just taken delivery of her new Europe and
the centerboard trunk was split. She was pretty upset." Donnie banged out a repair in three hours and was able to still catch his flight home. He said, "I had been in Athens for twelve days and had wanted to go
tour the city before I left, but knowing she got a silver medal made it worth it." Knowing Johnny and Charlie also got a silver medal makes one wonder if Donnie may have a magic touch...
