Qindao, China (August 9) - USA Finn sailor Zach Railey sailed a smashing opener on the first day of the Olympic Sailing Regatta in Qingdao, China. In string current and patchy winds
averaging six knots, Railey pulled off a second and a fifth place in today's two races, putting him in second place overall in this 26-boat Olympic fleet.
Railey's most impressive move today was on the final run of the first race, when he passed thirteen boats. After rounding a minute and nine seconds behind the first place boat on the last leg, he
shaved almost the whole gap, finishing only five seconds behind Greek sailor Emilios Papathanasiou. On a day with inverting fleets and frequent lead changes, Railey's consistency between the two races is what brings him to
the top of the fleet. He currently sits two points behind Rafal Szukiel of Poland and four points ahead of three-time Olympic medalist Ben Ainslie of Great Britain.

Beijing Opening Ceremonies: What's missing in the show that has it all?
Over ten thousand athletes marched into the Bird's Nest last night under the pomp and splendor of the Opening Ceremonies. They were welcomed by a cast of 14,000 performers and 91,000 spectators. At an event that seemed to
have it all, something was missing: Sailors. Though sailors from six of the 204 competing countries were ceremonial flag bearers, many of them did not make the trek from Qingdao to Beijing.
Eight USA sailors stayed back, and almost all countries held back their team members who were competing in forthcoming events. On the other hand, Indian Finn sailor Nachhatar Singh
Johal told friend and Finn class medal favorite Jonas Hoegh-Christiansen of Denmark that some people come here to win medals, and some people come here to experience the event. Johal took an early morning flight to Qingdao
and make it to the course with minutes to spare.
