John Dane III and his son-in-law Austin Sperry sail the two-man Star boat and will compete in their first Olympic Sailing Regatta at the 2008 Games in Qingdao, China. Fifty-eight-year-old Dane is the oldest
member of the whole U.S. Olympic delegation, and has tried to get to the Olympics since his first campaign in 1968. He and his son-in-law, Austin Sperry, have been sailing together since 2005. Sperry is married to Dane’s daughter,
Sally, and was a training partner for the 2004 Olympic Star sailing representative. Their Southern characters and their family relationship make them an entertaining duo, so look for them on the Today Show on NBC on Friday, August 8.
