20080731ChubbJuniors Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Champions Go Into History Books

The Chubb U.S. Junior Championships wrapped up last Thursday with the 93 sailors safely returning to shore just before a thunderstorm rolled in over Lake Michigan. After three days of racing in light wind conditions, the winners were awarded the Smythe Trophy (singlehanded - sailed in Lasers), the Bemis Trophy (doublehanded - sailed in Club 420s), and Sears Cup (triplehanded - sailed in Lightnings) at an awards ceremony. The US SAILING National Championship was hosted by Chicago Yacht Club and sponsored by Chubb Group of Insurance Companies and LaserPerformance. History was written in the doublehanded Club 420 fleet when Korbin and Haley Kirk became the first siblings to win the event in its 34-year history. Representing Long Beach Yacht Club (Calif.), these two strong competitors bring back the Bemis Trophy to Long Beach turf 29 years after the last Long Beach YC sailors won the trophy in 1979. The siblings were thrilled after their win. "We're very excited!" exclaimed 16-year-old Haley...

qingdao_villageview Olympic Sailing Preview: What to Expect in Qingdao

Eighteen American sailors are in Qingdao, China, ready to begin the 2008 Olympic Games. After qualifying at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in October 2007, most of these athletes have trained by hitting the winter racing circuits in either Australia or Florida, sailing the spring circuits in Europe, and traveling to summer training camps in Qingdao. They have already spent ten days in Qingdao for more training and acclimation, and the ten-month road from the Trials to the Games culminates here on August 9. As the Olympic Sailing Regatta is stacked with more concentrated talent than almost any other regatta, the medal favorite lists are long. While there are only three spots on the Olympic podium, the deep competition combined with the tricky conditions mean some classes see as many as ten to fifteen potential medalists...

US SAILORS of The Week -
Sherri Campbell & Jerelyn Biehl
San Diego sailors Jerelyn Biehl and Sherri Campbell could not be more proud or excited as they, with their families, are spending most of the month of August in Qingdao, China to watch the Olympic Regatta. Of course they will both be rooting for Team USA, but that's not all. They will specifically be rooting for their sons (Graham Biehl, 470 crew, and Andrew Campbell, Laser) who are on the Olympic Team! Jerelyn and Sherri are friends who have much in common. Not only are their sons current Olympians, they are also avid sailors, each the mother of two sons, business partners and both reluctant US SAILORS of the Week insisting that "it's really about the boys"...

U.S. Olympic Team Profile
Head Coach -- Gary Bodie

Gary Bodie has coached intercollegiate sailing since 1978, working at Old Dominion University, the Naval Academy, and Hampton University, his teams have won an unprecedented fifteen College National Championships, including four Dinghy Championships. In 1998, Gary was named as Head Coach and High Performance Director for the US Sailing Team, working specifically with Laser and Soling sailors for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team won four medals: Gold in the Star class, Silver in the Men's and Women's 470, and Bronze in the 49er class. In 2004, sailors won Gold in the Men's 470 class and Silver in the Tornado class. For the 2008 Games, Gary again serves as High Performance Director, coaching that same Tornado duo in their fourth Olympics. The majority of the 2008 Team, competing in their first Olympics, will clearly benefit tremendously from his wealth of experience and track record of success!
